It’s beautiful. The way that all of God’s creation was created to praise Him, day and night.

My senior year I worked at a plant farm, and on the first day my boss told me that the plants respond best to songs of praise to God. They would constantly have worship music playing throughout the whole nursery so that the plants would flourish. Studies show that other genres of music such as rock and rap make the plants dull and dry. With the music of praise they stand tall and are vibrant with color. Along with music, my boss would ask me to speak to the plants. Not gonna lie, I thought she was crazy at first but she told me that speaking life over the plants helps them grow. When they are spoken things of truth, goodness, joy, and kindness they flourish. Isn’t this oddly similar for us. Oftentimes our tongues run rampant speaking death over everyone whether it is words of judgment, hate, passivity, rudeness or just unkindness. We are speaking into the lies that the devil has already planted inside of each other and we are feeding into that. It’s like a plant that has a dark spot on it. You want to treat that spot. Pluck it out before it kills the rest of the plant, if you don’t  care for it in its early stages sooner than later the whole plant will be tarnished. As brothers and sisters we are to help point out those dark deadly spots in us so that we can grow. If we let it pass or if we feed that dark spot more death than are we really loving each other?

In John 13:35 it says “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, by the way you love another.

I’ve been sitting on that verse alot lately. If someone were to evaluate my life just based on the way I love people, would they know that I am a disciple of Jesus?  I challenge you to ask yourself that. I know that I have had to really reevaluate the way I love my brothers and sisters.

  1. Amen! This reminds me of a line from a Casting Crowns song. “Some of us love our friendships more than we love our friends. Plucking out dark spots is where the rubber meets the road in loving others. It’s so easy to affirm people and tell them how wonderful they are. It is so very hard to tell someone something they don’t want, but need to hear.

  2. Anna, thank you for the story and your vulnerability in this post. I love the analogy of plants and our hearts. We are the garden and the gardners in this illustration.
This one makes me really did deep to evaluate my relationships!
    Love and hugs,
